The Epley maneuver is an exercise designed to treat symptoms of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).
BPPV is caused when calcium deposits in the inner ear become dislodged, which can send incorrect signals to your brain about your position. The Epley maneuver brings the calcium deposits back to their proper place.
When To Use the Epley Maneuver
Our team will help determine if the Epley maneuver will help with your symptoms. They may recommend that you complete the maneuver three times daily until your symptoms have been relieved for 24 hours, and they will let you know whether your symptoms are caused by your right or left ear.
How To Perform the Epley Maneuver
- Sit on a bed.
- If the problem is in your right ear, turn your head 45 degrees to the right. If the problem is in your left ear, turn your head 45 degrees to the left.
- Keeping your head turned, lie back with your shoulders on the pillow and wait 30 seconds.
- Turn your head to the opposite direction without raising it. Wait another 30 seconds.
- Turn your head and body another 90 degrees in the same direction for 30 seconds.
- If the problem is in your right ear, sit up on the left side. If the problem is in your left ear, sit up on the right side.
